Security Situation in the United Kingdom
In the wake of the May 22 terrorist attack in Manchester, the UK government has raised its assessment of the threat level for terrorism in the United Kingdom to “critical.” This is the highest level in the UK government’s threat-level system and indicates a further attack is expected imminently.
As a result of this change in threat level, UK authorities have announced that they will deploy military units and a heightened police presence near large public gatherings, major public venues, and transportation hubs. More information on the UK’s system of threat levels is available from the MI5 Security Service website.
On May 1, 2017, the Department of State updated its European Travel Alert, reminding U.S. citizens of the potential for future terrorist attacks in Europe. The most accurate real-time information about security in the United Kingdom is available from UK authorities, who have responsibility for the safety and security of all persons in the United Kingdom. U.S. citizens are encouraged to monitor local media and to factor updated information into personal travel plans and activities.
